Glade Spring Volunteer Life Saving Crew was formed due to a need for ambulance response in the central and eastern parts of Washington County. Paid ambulance services were available, but the majority of residents refused to call for them, usually due to an inability to pay. At that time, Washington County Life Saving Crew, located in Abingdon, was operating as a First Responder agency only, and were not able to transport. Some of their members decided to come together and found the Glade Spring Volunteer Life Saving Crew, and on August 22, 1985, operating with one ambulance, GSVLSC began providing emergency care and transportation to the sick and injured.
